Laser Hair Removal – Who Is a Good Candidate?

Maybe you’re wondering if you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal, but just what factors are important in deciding whether you’re a good candidate or not? Read on…

After Botox injections, laser hair removal is the most common cosmetic procedure performed at clinics and spas all over the world. During the course of the treatment, highly-concentrated beams of light hair are directed at hair follicles which absorb the light and are destroyed. Because hair grows in several phases, the laser is only capable of destroying hair that is currently growing. This means that 4 to 6 treatments over a period of several months are typically required to remove all of the hair as it moves through 3 main stages of growth.

Many people are naturally concerned about the risks of laser hair removal treatment and whether it will work for them. The best candidates for laser hair removal have traditionally been men and women with light skin tones and dark hair. Those with light hair colours (such as blonde, red or grey hair) were not as receptive to the treatment because it depended on targeting darker pigments (melanin) in the hair. Also, darker-skinned people sometimes experienced problems such as whitening of the skin when the laser picked up on the melanin in the skin.

However, as a result of modern technological advances in laser hair removal, hair and skin colour have become less of an issue, and many laser hair removal clinics now consider candidates to fall into 2 main categories: “excellent” and neutral” with no “poor” candidates. So it is possible for people with darker skin tones or lighter hair can safely get good results from the treatment. However, by its very nature, laser hair removal will work best for lighter-skinned individuals with dark, coarse hair.

If you’re unsure if laser hair removal will be effective for you, the best thing to do is to make an appointment for a free consultation at a skin clinic and ask the experts there. It’s important to make sure the clinic is suitably-equipped, especially if they aren’t used to working with people with dark skin tones. Here the key point to check is what type of lasers are used and the level of experience of the technician. All other things being equal, it’s better to pay a little more and get the services of an experienced dermatologist than to risk going to a spa which may have less-experienced staff.

If you have dark skin, ask if the clinic has Nd:YAG-type lasers (such as the CoolGlide, GentleYAG, Lyra-i, Sciton brands) as these tend to produce better results on darker skin than the 2 other popular types of laser (Alexandrite and Diode). For fairer skinned (Caucasian) people, Alexandrite lasers are the best, and for people of Mediterranean and Asian descent, Diode lasers have been proven to be the most effective.

Whatever your skin colour, by making sure that the technician who is going to be doing your laser hair removal has plenty of experience and has the best equipment available for your skin type, you’ll feel more relaxed about your treatment and get better results.
